Caring for Your Floors

One of the many benefits of Kährs wood and LVT floors is their durability and ease of care. However, like most products, a certain amount of maintenance is necessary to keep your floor in top condition. We’ve put together some valuable tips and advice for simple care and maintenance to help ensure your new vinyl floor stays as beautiful and fresh as possible for years to come.

Protect Your Floor Against Dirt

Keep Gravel and Sand Outside

Roughly 85% of indoor dirt comes from outside. To significantly prolong the life of your wood or LVT floor, take steps to keep this grit out—like using a high-quality doormat. Additionally, vacuum often to ensure gravel and other abrasive materials don’t remain on your floor.

Use Furniture Protection

Dragging furniture can easily scratch even the most durable wood and LVT floors. Using protective pads or similar protectors on the legs of chairs, sofas, and tables is an effective way to prevent scrapes and wear.

Light Floors Need More Attention

If you have light-colored wood floors, you’ll find they need to be cleaned a bit more frequently. This is because they tend to show wear and dirt more easily. Similarly, light-colored LVT floors will reveal dirt sooner than darker ones. Therefore, we recommend more frequent cleaning to maintain their fresh appearance.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Cleaning Your Floor

Wood floor: For hardwood floors, dry cleaning is generally preferred over wet cleaning. Regularly vacuum and brush your floor, and occasionally use a damp, well-wrung cloth or mop. For optimal results, use Kährs Cleaner diluted in water or the ready-mixed Kährs Spray Cleaner. The floor should dry within a minute if the correct amount of liquid is applied.

LVT floor: For daily cleaning of LVT floors, both dry and slightly damp mops are effective and gentle on the protective layer. Always vacuum up larger dirt particles before mopping to prevent unnecessary wear. For tougher grime, you can add a pH-neutral cleaning solution.

Removing Marks / Stain Removal

Address marks and stains as quickly as possible using Kährs Cleaner diluted in water. Always avoid cleaning fluids that contain ammonia.

Oiled wood floor: Strong stain removers and aggressive scrubbing can cause discoloration on oiled wood floors. After cleaning the area, re-oil it with Kährs Satin Oil. If a color difference persists, you can use a colored Kährs Touch-up oil.

Lacquered wood floor: Be aware that strong stain removers and hard scrubbing can damage the lacquer finish. For tips on removing difficult stains, please refer to page 18 in our Maintenance brochure.

LVT floor: If something spills on your vinyl floor, wipe it up immediately. If a stain has set, you might need to use cleaning products. Ensure no cleaning product residue remains on the floor once the stain is gone. Never use strong solvents like acetone or paint thinner, and always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for product use and quantity.

Wood Floor Maintenance Tips

Oiled floors should be treated directly after installation and once a year thereafter. Both oiled and lacquered floors can be freshened up when the wood floor becomes hard to clean or if the surface gets scratched or dull.

Oiled floors: Use Kährs Satin Oil.

Lacquered floors: Use Kährs Lacquer Refresher.
