Selecting Your Ideal Floor
Your floor is a cornerstone of your home’s style. A beautiful hardwood floor offers both aesthetic appeal and comfort underfoot. When making your choice, prioritize its appearance, tactile feel, color, and the level of maintenance you prefer.
The Foundation of Your Home’s Style
A floor is far more than just a surface to walk on; it’s a fundamental element that shapes a room’s entire ambiance, working in harmony with your walls and ceiling. When designing your home, consider starting with the floor, as it forms the permanent base for your space—unlike walls and ceilings that can easily be repainted.
The look and feel of your floor, including its color, surface, pattern, and hardness, vary greatly across different wood species. You can explore options from the light, serene tones of Birch or Maple, through the versatile shades of Oak and Beech, all the way to the dark, vibrant hues of Walnut or Jarrah. We encourage you to learn as much as possible about these diverse species to discover how each can uniquely transform the mood of your home. Your floor truly sets the tone.
Light, Dark, or Natural?
The color of your floor profoundly impacts how a room feels. A dark floor, while absorbing light, creates a strong sense of warmth and coziness. In contrast, a light wood floor reflects light, making the room feel more spacious and open.
Consider Your Space and Lifestyle
When choosing your floor, think about where it will be installed and the amount of daily wear and tear it will face. A lacquered surface offers easier cleaning, while oil highlights the wood’s beautiful natural structure, grain, and color. Don’t forget to consider the wood’s inherent hardness and the option for future re-sanding.
Lacquered or oiled floor?
A lacquered finish generally reflects more light than an oiled one. However, our ultramatt lacquer is a unique exception, giving the floor the authentic look and feel of untreated, newly sawn timber. Keep in mind that a matt lacquered surface will have a coarser texture compared to a satin lacquered finish.
Ideal Floor Design for Your Room
The dimensions and pattern of your flooring planks significantly impact a room’s sense of space. Generally, a 1- or 2-strip floor often suits larger rooms, while a 3-strip pattern can be ideal for smaller areas. Similarly, wide and long planks typically enhance larger spaces, but remember, there’s an exception to every design rule!
The Sensory Experience of Your Floor
A floor’s true impression comes from both what you see and what you feel. Many of our designs feature surfaces that are handscraped and/or brushed, crafting a unique patina that engages all your senses. For an even more distinctive look, choose planks with bevelled edges.
The Role of Natural Light
The type, direction, and intensity of light in a room—from natural light and window size to additional lighting sources—all significantly impact how your floor is perceived. A common guideline is to install flooring lengthwise, directed towards the main window. However, for long, narrow rooms with windows along the length, you’ll need to decide whether to prioritize accentuating the room’s shape or optimizing the natural light.
Lay Your Floor
Beyond the floor itself, other room features play a crucial role. Installing your flooring lengthwise will visually accentuate the room’s shape. Similarly, light floors paired with light walls will enhance the sense of spaciousness, while a dark floor naturally grounds the room. Combining dark floors with dark walls can visually diminish the room’s size, but it also creates an undeniable feeling of warmth and coziness.
Mixing Different Floors: Is It Possible?
To create a cohesive feel throughout your home, consider choosing floors that complement each other while being perfectly suited for each individual space. For example, you might select a 1-strip floor for your living room and its 3-strip counterpart for the bedroom. Further enhance this sense of unity by opting for matching moldings and skirtings.
Crafting Your Floor’s Character
Whether you envision a clean, calm, and elegant space, or prefer a rustic look rich with patina, knots, and cracks, Kährs offers a diverse selection of gradings, each with its unique character. The grading of a board depends on which part of the log it’s sourced from. We also utilize a variety of surface treatments to create an extensive range of distinct styles for your floor.
Durability and Care
Our floors are both durable and easy to keep clean. With proper maintenance, your wood floor will retain its beauty for years to come. It’s worth remembering, however, that oiled floors generally require more upkeep than lacquered ones. Also, light-stained and lighter-colored wood species tend to show wear more readily than darker ones.
